Experienced legal professionals are being sought to play a key role in the administration of prison discipline in the Isle of Man.
Independent Adjudicators conduct inquiries into the more serious or persistent alleged breaches of the custody rules. They have the power to hand down penalties, including the award of additional days in prison.
The Appointments Commission is currently seeking to appoint three new Independent Adjudicators to serve for a term of five years. Candidates must be, or have been, a barrister, advocate or solicitor for at least seven years.
While the Prison Governor and Deputy Governors carry out many inquiries into alleged disciplinary offences at the prison, the more serious matters are often referred to Independent Adjudicators. This may include investigations into allegations of assault on prison officers or other detainees, or the possession of prohibited items.
An Independent Adjudicator can expect to deal with between 12 and 20 disciplinary inquiries each year.
Home Affairs Minister Bill Malarkey MHK said: ‘Independent Adjudicators perform an essential duty within the custody service. Experienced individuals are needed to maintain high standards and it is hoped that suitable candidates will come forward to take on what is a varied, interesting and demanding role.’
People who feel they have the necessary attributes and enthusiasm to take up a position as an Independent Adjudicator should visit the Appointments Commission pages on the Government website. This provides further information about the terms of appointment and full details of the knowledge and skills required.
Appointees must be able to provide an ongoing commitment in terms of their time, interest and attention and demonstrate the qualities that underpin public life – selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
The application process is fair, open and transparent, and appointments are made on merit, based on a person’s skills and experience.
Application forms can be completed and submitted electronically via the webpage. Printed versions of the information pack and application form can be obtained from the Secretary to the Appointments Commission, tel: 687582 or email appointments.commission@gov.im.
The deadline for applications is 5pm on 21 April 2017.
