Department and Commissioners hold constructive meeting over former Courthouse

by isleofman.com 7th April 2017

The Department of Home Affairs has today, Friday 7 April 2017, held a constructive meeting with members of Ramsey Town Commissioners regarding Ramsey Courthouse.

Further consideration will now be given to the matter before a recommendation is made to Treasury relating to the disposal of the building.

Minister Bill Malarkey MHK said: ‘I am aware of the strong feelings this issue has generated within the community. I am dedicated to working together with local authorities and other partners to deliver local, national and international priorities.’

‘As I made clear at the outset of this process, it has always been my intention to talk to Ramsey Commissioners before arriving at a decision. Today’s meeting honoured a commitment I gave to the local authority in a letter in February. Our discussions were very positive and amicable and both parties will now have an opportunity to consider their positions ahead of further talks later this month.’

He added: ‘As a Government Minister, I have a responsibility to act in the best interests of taxpayers and follow the established process to consider all available options.

‘As negotiations are still ongoing it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment at this time.’

Andy Cowie of Ramsey Town Commissioners commented: ‘The people of Ramsey are deeply passionate about keeping the Courthouse building for the benefit of the local community. Ramsey Town Commissioners share that desire and have discussed a proposed offer with the Department of Home Affairs.

‘The meeting with the Minister was very productive and positive and we will now go back to the board to consider our next steps. We will continue to work with the Department to try to achieve a solution and look forward to resuming our discussions with the Minister in the near future.’
