The audience can expect a mix of musical styles from America at a special concert at the Erin Arts Centre in Port Erin this Friday (April 21).
The event – an evening of acoustic blues, ragtime and folk music featuring Blue John and Dr Phil and Friends - will start at 7.30pm.
And the performers will be taking advantage of the fantastic natural acoustics of the centre by mostly playing ‘unplugged’. The EAC is one of the few venues of its kind where everyone can hear every last note without any electricity being used to increase the volume.
In this case it means the audience will hear acoustic guitars, mandolin and harmonica the way they were originally intended to be heard. The only instrument plugged in will be an electric U-bass.
The concert is a collaboration between Isle of Man and Scottish-based musicians.
Blue John is John Gregory, of Douglas, who is a performer, guitar tutor and promoter. This event will be John’s only full-length headline performance in the Isle of Man this year.
Dr Phil, from Dunoon, Scotland, is a musician, music historian and radio presenter, known throughout the world for his acclaimed biography of blues legend Mississippi John Hurt.
They will be joined by Papa Cass (Tim Cass), from Onchan, - John’s long time blues duo partner - and The Mechanic (Guy Pate) who regularly performs with Dr Phil in Dunoon.
John said: “Dr Phil has become a familiar face in the Isle of Man due to his sell out presentations and concerts but this event will mark Guy’s first visit and will be the first time the four of us will have shared a stage together!
“We have put together a totally eclectic, exciting and interesting show which covers everything from American folk and country blues to rhythm and blues with a bit of Scottish folk and doo-wop thrown into the mix too!”
Also joining the four of them as a very special guest will be 12-year-old Amelia Andrasi who will be paying tribute to an American blues/folk guitar legend!
Blue John and Dr Phil will be touring the British Isles later this year as guests of American blues guitarist Ari Eisinger.
