The Multiple Sclerosis Society Wheel and Walk at the NSC Cycle Track on Saturday drew over 70 participants, most of whom have MS or have a friend, family member or work colleague with this incurable, often disabling condition.
"I am delighted that so many people, many in wheelchairs, some with mobility scooters and walking sticks, came out on a cold and rainy morning to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis and raise funds for the local branch of the MS Society," says branch chairman Derek Patience, seen here on the right in his wheelchair.
"We hope to have raised over ?5,000 at this event, which will enable the Society to continue to provide vital services to those with MS, and as well as raising awareness of the condition, we have shown that having a physical disability like MS doesn't mean you can't get out there and be part of an event like this,” Derek continues. “Just one lap of the cycle track, 800 metres, can be like a marathon to someone who is disabled, and I'm incredibly proud of all those who walked or wheeled even further, plus I'm very grateful to those who lent a helping hand, or a helping push in my case. It was a great event and one which I'm sure we'll repeat - although next time it would be good if it was a bit warmer!"
As well as thanking everyone who took part and those who have given generous donations, the MS Society would also like to mention the help given by NSC and everyone who volunteered to help marshall around the track, including St Johns' Ambulance, who were on hand to provide first aid, which thankfully wasn’t required.
