A music project for young people releases its third album next week.
Soundcheck, run by the Department of Education and Children’s Youth Service, offers singers and musicians aged 11 to 19 rehearsal space, instruments and recording equipment.
Soundcheck is registered as a charity, under the chairmanship of Laurence Skelly MHK, and holds sessions in Douglas (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), Ramsey (Monday) and Castletown (Monday) from 6-9pm.
It issued albums in 1996 and 2013.
The new album, out on May 25th, features tracks by young people recorded in Soundcheck’s dedicated studio at the Youth Arts Centre, Douglas.
‘Dare To Be Different’ will be available as a CD and download and its cover will feature artwork from 15-year-old Megan Turner.
Mr Skelly said: ‘It’s important we encourage young people to fulfil their potential and chase their dreams.
‘Young people starting out in music often lack rehearsal space, can’t afford instruments and don’t have access to recording facilities.
‘Soundcheck gives young musicians and singers the space and support they need to grow their talents.
‘We welcome support from the business sector and individuals and we are always happy to hear from anyone who is willing to assist our young people.’
Soundcheck welcomed supporters to an open evening at its base, the Youth Arts Centre in Douglas.
Among those present was His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, Sir Richard Gozney, who has agreed to be Soundcheck’s patron, continuing an association begun by his predecessor Adam Wood.
He enjoyed talking to young people about their music-making – and had a lesson on bass guitar from Eddie Morris, 17.
The event was also a chance for the charity to mark the contribution of its treasurer, Jonno Gollow, who died in March.
Mr Skelly said: ‘Jonno had a deep passion for music and his commitment to Soundcheck went well beyond being a trustee. He organised workshops for members and gave up a huge amount of time to nurture their musical ambitions.’
Jonno’s employer, Ashton International, attended the event, as did representatives from Barclays, who saw at first-hand the recording studio they helped to fund.
