Plans go on show for school extension and refurbishment

by isleofman.com 12th May 2017

Parents, pupils and the wider public are being invited to view and comment on plans for extensions to and the refurbishment of St Mary’s RC Primary School in Douglas.

The proposals will go on show at the school on Wednesday 17th May from 3pm to 7pm.

The works would address three key issues: lack of sufficient classroom space, inadequate disability access and unsatisfactory communal hall space for dining, sport and performances.

The school has permanent capacity for 275 pupils but pupil numbers are commonly over 300, meaning mobile classrooms are in use.

The multi-level nature of the school means pupils with physical disabilities can’t be admitted.

The hall, which is used for dining, sport and school plays and concerts, isn’t big enough and can’t be divided up, meaning activity is restricted.

Under the plans, a two-storey extension would add four classrooms and a new shared activity area. An extended hall, capable of being partitioned off, would mean activities could take place concurrently.

The opportunity would also be taken to improve vehicular access to the school car park, currently in a difficult to negotiate cul-de-sac.

Externally the school, which looks tired and dated, would be totally re-clad, with new windows and doors, and fully re-roofed.

At an estimated spend of ?3.8 million, the proposed works would represent a significant investment in our young people, and provide further support for our construction industry.

The Department of Education and Children plans to submit the scheme proposals to planners later this month. With planning approval, and Tynwald approval early in 2018, it is hoped work could start at Easter 2018 and be completed by August 2019.
