After shooting to fame as a schoolboy in the 1980s singing Walking in the air, Aled Jones MBE has succeeded in carving out a successful career in the media as a singer and actor, along with hosting his own morning Weekend show plus BBC radio shows. Having released more than 30 albums Aled has performed at the Hollywood Bowl and The Vatican and continues to perform live shows around the world.
Aled’s concert at The Gaiety theatre last weekend was a resounding success. On the stage with just a guitar accompaniment from Pete Harris, the audience was treated to a variety of uplifting songs from his popular repertoire such as Amazing Grace, Danny Boy and Hushabye Mountain from his time in the stage show Chitty Chitty Bang. He also added incredible duets, some from his chart-topping album ‘One Voice’ which features Aled the man singing alongside Aled the boy plus a timeless version of ‘As time goes by’ with Dame Vera Lynn, which was put together as part of her 100th birthday celebrations.
Joining him on stage was St. German’s Cathedral choir and Anagh Coar school choir who sang both separately and together a few pieces. The Cathedral choir’s repertoire included a beautiful rendition of ‘Alleluia’ and Anagh Coar school choir sang a lively version of The Beatles classic ‘Help’. Together with Aled they sang John Rutter’s Gaelic Blessing among others. They did a fantastic job and certainly did the island proud.
A wonderful evening of music making and getting to know Aled through anecdotes and humour, with him happily promising to come back to the island very soon.
