The popular Summer Reading Scheme run by the Family Library returns again this year, thanks to support from PwC Isle of Man.
Each summer, the Family Library’s young members are invited to sign up for an exciting reading challenge – to read six books during their summer holidays.
The theme for this summer’s scheme – which PwC Isle of Man is sponsoring – is ‘Circus’ and Family Library staff will be in schools after the TT holidays to promote it.
The Family Library, alongside the Mobile Library, is a registered charity. It has recently received a significant financial commitment which will see any money raised by the libraries or their members match-funded, up to a maximum of ?125,000 a year, for a three-year period. This will go a long way towards securing the future of the library services.
Mary Cousins, Librarian in Charge at the Family Library, said: ‘Our Summer Reading Scheme encourages reading, writing and creativity throughout the school holidays, with more than 300 children signed up for last year.
‘
The challenge is great fun each year, and alongside the reading of six books, there is a points-scoring game, with prizes at the end. Each week there will be different things to do in the library, including crafts, puzzles, games and activities, and lots of fun things to do at home too. We are hugely grateful to PwC Isle of Man for enabling us to continue to provide such a wonderful scheme for our young members.’
The scheme is free, although a donation is always welcome, and it is being launched in schools this week.
Paul Jones, Assurance Director at PwC Isle of Man, said: ‘The Family Library and Mobile Library have provided such excellent and vital services to the Island for many years, and we are proud to help them continue the superb work they do. The Summer Reading Scheme is always popular, and we hope as many children as possible join in the fun.’
