National Theatre brings two contrasting productions to Ramsey

by isleofman.com 12th June 2017

It would be difficult to find two plays with more contrasting themes, than ‘Salome’ written and directed by Yael Farber, and ‘Peter Pan’, J M Barrie’s beloved story of the boy who never grew up, yet both can be seen at The Northern Theatre Experience at Ramsey Grammar School’s Sixth Form Lecture Theatre in the coming weeks. The first will be screened live from the National Theatre on Thursday 22nd June at 7pm, whereas ‘Peter Pan’ flies into Ramsey on Saturday 8th July, with a matinee performance at 2pm, designed to appeal to children of all ages. Refreshments will be served during the interval.

‘Salome’ is a reimagining of the Biblical tale as a story of revolution, with the heroine’s demand for the execution of Iokaanan, or John the Baptist, designed to inflame the occupied nation to revolt. Described by The Telegraph’s critic, Dominic Cavendish, as “an imposingly ritualistic reading of this chilling female/male showdown”, it features epic staging and lighting, and has a running time of 110 minutes (no interval).  Join us before the show starts for some light refreshments.

When Peter Pan, leader of the Lost Boys, loses his shadow, headstrong Wendy helps him to reattach it. In return, she is invited to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await. A riot of magic, music and make-believe ensues. A delight for children and adults alike, Sally Cookson (NT Live: Jane Eyre) directs this wondrously inventive production, a co-production with Bristol Old Vic theatre, recorded live at the National Theatre.

The Northern Theatre Experience launched its screenings on 18th May and feedback received so far has been very positive with patrons delighted to have this venue in the north of the island.
