‘Fabulous folk extravaganza’ promised this week in Peel

by isleofman.com 12th June 2017

As part of Isle of Architecture’s series of ‘gigs in unusual spaces’, popular folk and trad bands The Mollag Band, Clash Vooar and Scran will be appearing in what the organisers describe as ‘fabulous folk extravaganza’ at the Peel Lifeboat Station.

And Mollag Band member Dave McLean says he’s looking forward to it:  “Appearing at the Lifeboat Station gig is taking our music a step further than even the original Mollags ever went. The ‘New History of the Isle of Man’ describes our predecessors as ‘performing bawdy and riotous songs in the streets and in the homes of anyone who would let them enter’ so we’re just following this tradition with a healthy dose of bawdy foot-stomping music down below Peel Castle, and then carried on what we hope will be a gentle summer breeze back into town!”

All three bands have heavy schedules performing around the Island this summer, and Isle of Architecture’s Breesha Maddrell is delighted that they were able to fit this ‘gig in an unusual space’ into the calendar:

“Both as part of the team behind Isle of Architecture and as a member of Clash Vooar I’m really excited to be part of this very special gig,” says Breesha.  “Experiencing and exploiting the acoustics of buildings not designed for live music is always a challenge, but one which any musician enjoys.  Our music is written and performed to be heard in spaces big and small, so to be performing in a building which is so central to the lives of the people of Peel, and to the many sailors and fishermen out in the Irish Sea, is a real privilege. With my own family connections to the RNLI, I’m delighted that proceeds from the event will support this very important charity.”

Scran, a new young band on the local trad scene, has been making a well-respected name for itself in recent months, first as runner up in the Next Big Thing at the Gaiety Theatre in March, and appearing at pop-up music events around the Island.  Its members are all accomplished musicians and engaging performers, so Scran will add a definite ‘youth’ element to the evening.

Tickets to the event (?5), which begins at 7.30pm, can be bought from Eventbrite, following the links on www.facebook.com/isleofarchitecture/events or at www.isleofarchitecture.com
