MAY LUNCH

The May lunch was attended by 32 members, by two members' guests, and by our Speaker, Dean Cooke, who was very kindly and ably standing in for his colleague, David Downey, who had been our advertised Speaker until he found it necessary to withdraw in order to fulfil other commitments.  Dean is Assistant Technician at the Isle of Man Hyperbaric Medicine Facility and the subject of his talk was “The Hyperbaric Chamber. The facility, operated by the Kevin Gray Memorial Trust, was opened during 1984 following the donation of a chamber after the death of local commercial diver, Kevin Gray. It is situated in the Scholl Building at the Fire Headquarters in Peel Road, Douglas but it is hoped to move it to a new facility at Nobles Hospital. The running costs of the facility are approx. ?460,000 pa and it currently carries out 15,000 treatment sessions per year using a 25 person chamber which can treat 250 patients per day.

The facility provides hyperbaric oxygen therapy for divers, for patients suffering from crush injuries such as those suffered by TT riders, and for patients suffering with chronic medical conditions such as strokes and MS. In order to use the facility, a patient must be referred by their GP unless one is a diver when one can self refer.

Dean answered members' questions and everyone left the meeting being much better informed about the facilities provided by the charity.
