Manx Telecom invests in faster fibre broadband

by isleofman.com 13th June 2017
Manx Telecom is investing further in fibre optic cabling and the latest broadband technology that will bring new download speeds of 1Gigabit per second to selected homes and businesses across the Island later this year.

In a multi-threaded investment, their current Superfast Fibre Broadband (Very fast Digital Subscriber Line Plus (VDSL+) service will be improved to provide up to 100 Megabits per second (from 80 Megabits per second ) and a new even faster service is being launched, providing download speeds up to 200Mbps.

Manx Telecom has also announced the roll-out of an Ultrafast broadband service of Fibre To The Premises (FTTP), whereby a fibre-optic cable is provided all the way to an individual home or business. The new Ultrafast service will provide download speed options between 20Mbps and 1Gbps, with upload speed options between 1Mbps and 200Mbps.

Delivered over Manx Telecom’s wholesale network, the above services will be available through any of the Island’s Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Kevin Paige, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Manx Telecom, said: “In addition to ?10million invested in fibre broadband since 2011, I am pleased to announce further investment in our current broadband service through the delivery of the latest speed enhancing technologies, Vectoring and VPlus. We are also formally launching our Ultrafast Fibre Broadband service via FTTP technology which continues to build on our goal of extending our fibre network, and the ultimate extension of that strategy is to provide fibre right into the homes and businesses on the Island. This means even faster speeds for the Island and comes in the wake of our announcement to all local ISPs that we are reducing our Superfast Broadband price rates again in September. With 93% of customers already in reach of a Superfast Fibre Broadband street cabinet on the Island, we are seeing a lot of people taking advantage of our Superfast Fibre Broadband services. With our latest services, residents and businesses will be able to enjoy even more high-bandwidth activity at the same time, including uploads and downloads, video streaming and conferencing, gaming and other online services.”

The initial Ultrafast Fibre Broadband FTTP roll-out during the second half of 2017 will be to 77 locations covering all major business districts and industrial estates across the Island.  The new FTTP services will also be available in Reeyt Ny Sheear and Hampton Farm estates.

Mr Paige added: “We will be monitoring take-up of these new services closely, with a view to expanding Ultrafast Fibre Broadband coverage further in 2018 and beyond.  Anyone who wishes to upgrade their residential or business broadband service, or are interested in FTTP, we would encourage them to contact their preferred Internet Service Provider.”
