The Calf Bird Observatory gets the Thomas Miller touch

by isleofman.com 28th June 2017

Thomas Miller, an independent and international provider of insurance, professional and investment services and the latest organisation to become a Gold Investor in Wildlife, have already got stuck in with a Corporate work party on the Calf of Man; painting at the Observatory.

Thomas Miller kindly donated the decorating supplies and their time to paint the Observatory and made it a little brighter for the Wardens and Guests in time for the first guest arrivals. Thankfully, the weather was on their side as they headed over to the Calf on Saturday 22nd April and the Calf did not disappoint. The volunteers were welcomed to the sound of birds singing, warm sunshine and given the seal of approval by some nosey seals in the harbour.

The Calf of Man has been a Bird Observatory since 1959 and forms part of a network of Bird Observatories around the UK. It is owned by Manx National Heritage and from March to November two wardens, managed by Manx Wildlife Trust, live on the Calf keeping detailed records of bird migration and breeding, and making sure the Observatory and its grounds are maintained. It’s all part of an amazing network across the Isle of Man. The Calf plays a vital role in with the Manx shearwater project, puffin reestablishment project, seals, and biodiverse seas surrounding the island. It’s one of our biodiversity hotspots.

After a short walk to the Observatory it was time to get started and in a short space of time, the 8 hard working volunteers had managed to paint outside walls, guest accommodation and the hall and landing area – twice! No small task. Once all the painting was finished, the group had time to explore the wonders of the Calf, both cultural and ecological. Spending time watching the bird warden, Aron, at work, getting a close view of some of the birds seen on the Calf, whether it be residential or migratory species. A sunset visit to the lighthouses was also in order but sadly, the sunset was not at its best. Sadly it was an early start the next morning to catch the boat but not before a hearty breakfast.

Marine Officer, Lara Howe, for the Trust said, “It has been a pleasure working with the volunteers from Thomas Miller. They worked really hard in such a short space of time and have achieved so much. The Observatory looks great, adding to this key site, and we can’t wait to work with Thomas Miller again in the future.”

On becoming an Investor in Wildlife, Ian Young, of Thomas Miller commented, “Thomas Miller are delighted to have signed up to the Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) Corporate Membership scheme. MWT has interesting and ambitious plans, including their Ramsey Forest project. Joining the corporate scheme further demonstrates our support for local causes.   Our recent trip to the Calf of Man allowed a number of our staff to experience the unique environment that is has to offer.  In addition to the assistance, we provided at the Observatory itself, the opportunity to inspect some of the rare visitors to the island, with the help of the ornithologist, and experience an evening in relative wilderness was something we all enjoyed.  MWT were extremely hospitable and we hope to be of assistance again in the future.”
