To say that we are utterly devastated at the news of Joe’s untimely passing in Spain on Monday 17th July 2017 is an understatement. He was a young man with a lively and infectious attitude to life.; someone who lit up a room as he entered but also had a caring and sensitive side appreciated by all.
Joe started school at St. Ninian’s High School coming to us from St. Mary’s Primary School in September 2010. He progressed well through his Key Stage Three years at Park Road and latterly at the new Lower School Site at Bemahague. He then moved on to study his GCSEs, A level and BTEC courses at Upper School. This year he was hoping to go to secure his A Levels and stay on island working. Although he was working part time in Shoprite, he had secured a full time position in the finance sector on island just before going on holiday.
Joe had just completed his A Level studies in Psychology and Double BTEC Sport and was passionate about both subjects.
He was genuinely loved by all that knew him and he was the type of student that energised a classroom with his continuous wit and humour. He was a pleasure to teach and was immensely proud upon joining Sixth Form. He proved to be a massive part of the Sixth Form community; known by everyone for his huge smile. He could be relied on for cheering you up when you felt down.
He acted with maturity and confidence whilst compering the most recent Christmas Extravaganza and the audience were receptive to his humour throughout – he was proud to have been asked to lead the event. In addition at the Year 13 Prom there was Joe yet again leading the tributes, awarding the prizes and ensuring everyone had a great time.

I know that I speak for everyone in the community of St. Ninian’s High School in passing on our sincere condolences to Joe’s family and close friends.

At this stage there is no date for Joe’s funeral. We will inform everyone via the school website when more information is available. In the new school year the school and family will explore a way of paying tribute to a happy and fun life that has so tragically been cut short.
Joe was a young man with a quip and a line for every occasion. One of his friends on twitter summed up the feelings of all at St. Ninian’s when they said “heaven has gained a true legend.”
