Young people have gained sport-based qualifications that will benefit the economy thanks to a partnership between Ardwhallan Outdoor Education Centre and University College Isle of Man (UCM).

Students have this summer gained BTEC sport qualifications with a focus on outdoor and adventurous activities – a growth area for visitors to the Island and, therefore, employment.

Six students completed level three qualifications after two years’ study, several of them gaining distinctions.

Four of the students have already gained work in the outdoor leisure industry in the Island.

Meanwhile, 12 students this year took a level two course, aimed at those who didn’t gain five core GCSEs at level C or above.

Eight achieved passes or merits, while the remaining four completed units that can be added to in future.

In addition, they have also re-taken maths and English GCSEs at UCM.

Three of these students will go on to study at level three.

Jenny Lantry, Chief Instructor at Ardwhallan, said: ‘Unlike traditional sport courses, these focused on outdoor and adventurous activities.

‘From our centre at West Baldwin, students accessed an alternative and inspiring way to learn and in doing so gained skills in kayaking, mountain biking, sailing, canoeing and archery, to name but a few activities.

‘They undertook expeditions to Scotland and the Lake District and carried out work experience in sports environments.

‘The Programme for Government pledges an education system that matches training to the Island’s growth areas and economic needs.

‘Government is committed to increasing leisure visitors to enjoy our fantastic surroundings and encouraging residents to make greater use of the many opportunities there are for using the outdoors.

‘It is encouraging new businesses to deliver these opportunities and it is important we offer our young people the skills they need to work in these areas.’
