Prizes for Young Healthy Breakfast Champions

by isleofman.com 26th July 2017

The creative talents of three Island schoolchildren have seen them come out on top in a competition designed to promote healthy eating.

In the second week of June, the Island’s 27 primary schools took part in Healthy Breakfast Week, a joint initiative with the Department of Health and Social Care, School Nursing Team to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy diet. Aimed at Year 6 children, the week tied in with a UK-wide campaign organised by the British Nutrition Foundation.

One of the events run during the week was a ‘Design Your Healthy Breakfast’ competition, which invited the children to either create a recipe or draw a picture of their perfect healthy meal. Robinson’s, the local food wholesale and retail business, lent a helping hand by sponsoring the Healthy Breakfast Week.

Maddie Crellin of Anagh Coar Primary School took first place with her design. Coming second was Constance Edwards of Bunscoill Rhumsaa, and in third place was Gary Burns, also of Anagh Coar Primary School. The children won smoothie makers and cookery lesson vouchers from The Cook Shack in Bride.

As well as supporting the competition, Robinson’s provided six breakfast boxes for school nurses to use during interactive teaching demonstrations during the week.

Katie Mathieson-Nelson, spokesperson for Robinson’s, comments, “We’d like to congratulate the talented winners of the competition, and say a big ‘well done’ to everyone who took part. We were delighted to support Healthy Breakfast Week, and to help promote the importance of good nutrition to our young people’.
