On Thursday 20th July Milntown hosted their inaugural tasting event – inviting Anne Berry from the Wine Cellar to entertain 60 guests with an evening of Gin Tasting. Funds raised will go towards the charity’s costs for the upkeep of the House and Gardens.
Guests were treated to a wonderful variety of Gins from around the world, all paired with a variety of botanicals and tonics as well as a delicious selection of canapes from the Milntown cafe. Anne delighted guests with stories of the introduction of Gin Palaces and the onset of the Gin Craze - a period in the first half of the 18th century when the consumption of gin increased rapidly in Great Britain, especially in London. Many people overconsumed and the city had a virtual epidemic of extreme drunkenness.
‘Gin Tasting on a Summer’s Evening’ was the first in a series of new events in the Milntown calendar aimed at broadening its appeal across the community. As a registered charity, Milntown receives no government money and will be looking at different ways to raise the funds necessary to help maintain the house and gardens for the benefit of the public.
Milntown boasts 15 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland which surround the magnificent mansion at the heart of the estate. The cafe is open daily (except Tuesdays) and offers breakfasts, lunches and tempting afternoon teas and treats all year round. The cafe and the estate are also available for private event hire. With stunning surroundings and first-class facilities, Milntown makes the ideal venue for your special event.
The next tasting event will be held on Wednesday 22nd November – follow our Facebook page and check our website for further details on the theme for the evening and how to book.
