New scam – Telephone calls from HMRC

by isleofman.com 13th December 2017

The OFT is warning the public about a new scam, after being contacted by concerned Manx residents.

There is currently a telephone scam where a recorded message is left, allegedly from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), stating that HMRC are bringing a lawsuit against the individual and is going to sue them.  The recipient is asked to phone 0161 850 7883 or similar and press “1” to speak to the officer dealing with the case.

DO NOT reply to the message as you may incur a very expensive charge for the call.

Please warn your family, friends and neighbours about this scam.

Further information and advice on ‘Scams’ in general can be found under the ‘Consumer Advice’ section on the OFT’s website https://www.gov.im/oft or by calling the Office on 686500.

Action Fraud’s website http://www.actionfraud.police.uk is also an excellent source of information and advice about the many different types of scams and how to avoid them.
