Isle of Man welcomes visit of Lord Chancellor

by isleofman.com 15th December 2017

Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHK has welcomed the opportunity to strengthen the Island’s relations with the United Kingdom Government.

The Isle of Man this week hosted a visit by the Rt. Hon. David Lidington MP, the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.

Mr Lidington has political responsibility for the Ministry of Justice, which manages the UK’s relationship with the Crown Dependencies.

In addition to meeting the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers, Mr Lidington gained an insight into the Isle of Man Courts and toured the Swagelok factory to learn more about the Island’s manufacturing industry. He also visited Tynwald and Isle of Man Creameries.

The Chief Minister said: ‘It was a pleasure to welcome the Lord Chancellor to the Island. The Isle of Man Government has a good working relationship with the UK and greatly values the support provided by the Ministry of Justice. The MoJ helps to promote awareness of the Isle of Man in Whitehall and facilitates discussions with other UK Departments on a range of important matters. The meeting with Mr Lidington provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been achieved in recent years and to look to the future and the post-Brexit era.’

Mr Lidington, the Conservative MP for Aylesbury, was appointed Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in June 2017.

He commented: ‘My visit to the Isle of Man is part of the UK Government’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening its longstanding bonds with the Crown Dependencies. The relationship between the UK and the Isle of Man is a positive and mutually beneficial one and it is vital that we continue to work closely together. We are working to make sure the Island’s interests are taken into account on key issues, including engaging with the Isle of Man as the UK prepares to leave the EU.’
