Mike Kewley retires as Captain & Honorary Secretary of Rowany Golf club

by isleofman.com 29th December 2017

As 2017 draws to a close, it brings to an end what has been an incredibly busy year for Mike Kewley who has been both Captain and Honorary Secretary of Rowany Golf Club.

Mike, who has been a member of the club for 52 years, said "It has been a bit of a hectic year as holding these two posts means I am involved in every aspect of the club on both the playing and administration sides.  I have enjoyed every bit though as it is such a friendly club to be part of with an incredible team of volunteers that keep the place going"

Mike admits to Rowany being well and truly in his veins and remembers back in the early days when the course had to double up as farm land with sheep grazing the fairways in the winter months! He has worked out that he has probably played more than 2,000 rounds so you could say he knows his way round every inch of the course.  In his heyday he was a low single figure handicap golfer who won the Island championship in 1974.

It has actually been a very successful year for Rowany, with lifelong member Tom Gandy being crowned Island champion prior to turning professional in September.  The course has also been in fabulous condition throughout 2017 gaining many plaudits from visiting golfers from on and off Island.  Rowany will need to be in tip top condition next year as it has been selected to host the Isle of Man Golf Championships to be held in July.

Mike is optimistic about the future of the club " The future for Rowany does look bright again after the restructuring that took place in the club’s operations in 2014.  We have been able to hold our 2018 fees flat at ?640 for full membership with discounts for under 40's and casual golfers. We now have a thriving junior section and our senior membership is growing again as people realise the benefits of playing on a well maintained course with easy tee access and quick rounds. Plus of course there is the renowned friendly atmosphere in the bar, which is more important to some members than the golf!"

Mike is handing over the Captain's reigns to Albie Stoddart after the traditional "drive in" on New Years Day. Albie will join recently inaugurated Lady Captain Ann Scott in heading up the playing side of Rowany for 2018.
