Future Tech Ltd launches Manx Travel Alexa Skill

by isleofman.com 8th January 2018
Future Tech Ltd is pleased to announce the release of a new Alexa Skill aimed specifically at residents in the Isle of Man. Alexa Skills are used on Amazon Echo, Amazon’s hands-free smart devices that uses speech to communicate with you.

Owen Cutajar, Managing Director of Future Tech Ltd told us, “We are seeing increased usage of voice interfaces with Alexa, Siri and other digital assistants becoming more useful and pervasive. Not only do they provide a different way to retrieve information, but they are also hugely useful to users who are visually impaired. Creating this Alexa Skill was a way to explore some of the Open Data that the Isle of Man Government makes available and also create something that could add value to anyone travelling around, to and from the Isle of Man. We think it’s quite useful, for example, that you can now check if the mountain road is open, while driving, without touching or looking at your phone.”

By simply downloading the skill and saying “Alexa, open Manx Travel” users are now able to check whether the Mountain Road is open or shut and check what is displayed on any of the Matrix signs around the Island. Other commands include “Alexa, ask Manx Travel is the mountain road open” and “Alexa, ask Manx Travel to read the sign at Richmond Hill”. Planned future updates will allow checking flight arrivals and departures as well as Steam Packet schedules.
