People are being warned not to fall victim to a 'smishing' attack doing the rounds on the Isle of Man.
Isle of Man Bank says it's aware of an issue and is urging residents to be vigilant.
A spokesperson says: "The current attack is similar to previous attacks recently whereby fraudsters are targeting people via their mobile phones.
"The text message still asks the recipient to ring a number about a fraudulent transaction but, unlike previous attacks, doesn't look like it comes from the bank.
"Please only contact your bank on published numbers and share the following tips with your friends and family to ensure they are aware of these scams and can practice good fraud prevention."
People are being urged to follow these precautions:
- Check the number you’re being asked to call. Only ever call the bank on a known or published number (such as on the bank’s website, the telephone directory or on your bank statement). Never call back on a number contained within a text message.
- Isle of Man Bank will never ask for your card reader code over the phone
- If you’ve responded to a message like this, you should contact the bank immediately using their published numbers.
- Recipients of fraudulent messages can help by sending a copy to the banks dedicated Smishing number: 07860 009 378
