Taxpayers on the Isle of Man are footing the bill for the purchase of the horse tram stables.

The Department of Infrastructure has bought the buildings at Tramway Terrace off Douglas Borough Council for ?600,000.

It says a key factor in the decision is to allow the Summerland site to remain clear – and therefore a more attractive proposition for investors.

Plans for temporary facilities on the site were approved last year however the department says it considers buying the existing building more 'cost effective'.

MHK Jason Moorhouse has responsibility for public transport: "The stables will continue to be used for its intended purpose while investment will also be made to secure the fabric of the property and improve welfare facilities.

"With the promenade redevelopment project set to begin later this year and the recent application to rebuild Strathallan depot, this is an exciting time for the horse trams, and the wider heritage transport network more generally, with commitments being made to ensure they continue to attract tourists for many years to come."
